Pajama Party Cake / Sleepover Party Cake

My daughter had a Pajama Party / Sleepover Party for her 9th birthday and this is the cake I made for her.

This was a really fun cake to make. The best part was that everyone, including the kids, helped to decorate the cake. The girls designed and put together the blanket on the cake along with their Nani who has specially come down to be here for her grand daughters 9th birthday.

I went shopping at Michael’s Arts and Crafts store and managed to buy a little of this and that to put this cake together. I used colored fondant to make the blanket, lollipops to make the headboard, bridal lace and satin bows to make the bed ruffle and sugared beads to scatter around the cake. You can substitute decorations with anything that you have on hand.

Ladybug Cake

Its a buggy bug world and my daughter wanted a bug themed party for her 4th birthday. Here is the cake that I made for her. This cake is so cute and really simple to make. I got the idea from an issue on Kids Parties brought out by Family Circle magazine.

Ladybug Cake

2  round cakes 8-9 inches ( use your favorite recipe)

3 cups of red frosting

1 cup green frosting

1/4 cup black frosting

Chocolate M&M’s

Yellow M&M’s

Decorative sugar flowers (or even fake plastic flowers will work)

Black and red candles

  • Place the two round cakes one on top of the other and put any filling you choose between them (jam, whipped cream, chocolate frosting, regular frosting and so on)
  • Frost the entire cake red leaving about  1 1/2 inches unfrosted at the bottom of the cake.
  • Frost the bottom 1  1/2 inches with the green frosting and use a toothpick to make uneven markings(lines) on the green frosting that make it look like reeds of grass.
  • Stick the sugar flowers all around the cake on the “grass” part.
  • Using the black frosting and a thin tipped pastry bag, mark out the “face” of the ladybug in the front half of the cake.
  • Then with the same frosting bag, divide the “body” of the ladybug into two equal halves.
  • Place the chocolate M&Ms on both sides of the body of the ladybug.
  • Use 2 yellow M&Ms to make eyes for the ladybug.
  • Then with the black frosting bag, pipe on eyeballs, eyebrows and a smile on the ladybugs face.
  • Stick your candles in and Happy Buggy Birthday!

Here are some other ideas I had for the bug party:

  • I served all kinds of bug themed foods
  • I put name tags with bug stickers for all the foods
  • I gave live ladybugs in little transparent bug jars as party favors – you can order these over the net.

Mouse Cookie Cake

We just love the book – If You Give a Mouse a Cookie by Laura Joffe Numeroff ! So my daughter decided that she wanted a “Mouse Cookie” party for her 4th birthday. Here is the cake that I made for her.

Mouse Cookie Cake

Mouse Cookie Cake

Mouse Cookie Cake

One 9X13 rectangular cake – any recipe you like

White frosting of your choice

Green, yellow, pink, blue & black frosting (I used the Mc Cormick Neon colors to tint the frosting for this cake)

Store bought or home made chocolate chip cookies

  • I frosted the entire cake green.
  • I used a toothpick and outlined the picture of the mouse onto the cake – (the picture was from one of the pages in the book). If You Give a Mouse A Cookie Cake
  • I then used a small spoon and lightly scraped out all the green frosting from inside the outline of the mouse.mousecookie
  • I then filled the mouse outline with white frosting.
  • You can do this using a knife for most part but for the thinner parts like the arms, I used a piping bag with a #2 wilton tip.
  • Using a #2 Wilton tip I then outlined the mouse figure with pink frosting – (this covers up all the messy parts and mistakes one might make along the way).
  • Using a #2 Wilton tip, I made the eyes and whiskers on the face with black frosting and the nose and mouth using pink frosting.
  • I used a #21 tip and made pink, green, blue swirls on and around the cake.
  • I then stuck the chocolate chip cookies on the colored swirls.

  • Pinkalicious Party

    THE PINKALICIOUS PARTY

    pinkalicious

This is one of the most fun birthday parties I did. My kids love the book Pinkalicious by Victoria Kann and Elizabeth Kann so we decided to do a Pinkalicious Birthday Party!! Given that my favorite color is pink – I went a little pink-a-crazy!

    THE CAKES

I made a few different kinds of cakes for this theme.

    • I used a Wilton oversized cupcake baking pan for this cake.
    • You can use your favorite cake and white frosting recipe.
    • I divided the frosting into 2 batches and colored one light pink and the other one dark pink.
    • I then frosted the bottom half dark pink and the top half light pink.
    • I used a #21 wilton tip and made the dark pink design of the top half of the cupckae
    • The big cherry on top of the cupckae is just a big blob of frosting
    • I then sprinkled the whole cake with pink sugar

    • I made two 9″ round regular cakes and frosted them with white frosting
    • I then used a Wilton #20 tip to make little pink flowers all over
    • I put red, pink and white M&M’s in the flowers – you can also just use frosting for the centers if you cant find these M&M’s

    OTHER PINK-A-FOODS AT THE PARTY

    • I did go a little pink crazy! I served most of the foods in pink platter, pails and other containers.
    • I put a lot of pink flowers and balloons all over and all of this was under our pink blooming cherry tree – it was really pretty!

    Candyland Cake

I love baking for kids – it is so much fun! I just did a Candyland themed birthday for my daughter. I decided to make the cake look like the board game. I love bright colors and had real fun playing with all the colors and candy while making this cake. Personally, I prefer kid’s cakes that have more of a homemade feel and are not so perfect. So –  here is how I made my not so perfect, very homemade Candyland cake!

    Candyland Cake

    CANDYLAND CAKE

Here is a list of the kinds of things I used ( you can always substitute according to what is available in your area):

    • One 9X13 sheet cake – to make this cake use your favorite cake recipe & frosting ( you can even use a box mix)
    • Keep the frosting white so that you can tint it in different colors
    • Lollipops
    • Pepppermint candies – all colors
    • Gumdrops
    • M&Ms
    • Starbursts
    • Ice-cream cones
    • Little frosted cupcakes (store bought or homemade) to fit into the Ice-cream cones
    • Little character picture cards& plastic players from the Candyland Game (you can always substitute this too with printouts from the computer or skip it altogether)
    • Pink sugar crystals

    Method:

    • Split the white frosting into four bowls and tint them green, pink,  yellow  and leave some white ( you can pick any colors you like or can even do the whole cake on white which will look very nice too).
    • I frosted the cake with these four different colors.
    • I then took the colored peppermint candies and stuck them all around the sides of the cake.
Peppermint candy on the side of the cake

Peppermint candy on the side of the cake

    The Rainbow Path

    • I started at the bottom left corner of the cake and used different colored starbursts to make the rainbow path on the cake.
    • I put two of the gingerbread character pawns at the beginning of the path.

    The Candy Castle

    • I put the frosted mini cupcakes into four of the the ice-cream cones and topped them off with a gumdrop each.
    • I then stuck these ice-cream cones deep into the top right hand side of the cake to make it look like a castle.
    • The castle should sit at the end of the starburst rainbow path.

    • Let one ice-cream cone ( the one at the back) be a little taller than the three in front surrounding it.
    • I stuck the character card of Princess Frostine  right in front of the castle

    Lollipop Woods

    • On the left hand upper corner of the cake I made lollipop woods.
    • I cut a few colored lollipops to different heights and put them in a cluster.
    • I stuck the character card of Lolly right in front of the woods

    Gumdrop Pass

    • I used a  few different colored gumdrops to build a small pass from the first level of the rainbow path to the next one.

    Peppermint Forest

    • On the right hand side of the cake where the path curves inwards to go to the next level, I used a few red and white peppermint candies to make a little representation of the Peppermint forest.
    • I stuck the character card of Mr. Mint right into the Peppermint forest.
Rainbow Path, Candy Castle, Lollipop Woods, Gumdrop Pass, Peppermint Forest

Rainbow Path, Candy Castle, Lollipop Woods, Gumdrop Pass, Peppermint Forest

    To finish off:

    • I stuck six colored and striped candles in and around the gingerbread characters.
    • I wrote happy birthday on the starbursts that made up the rainbow path with a #3 wilton tip
    • I used a #21 wilton tip to make little flowes/stars on the base around the cake and then I put different colored gumdrops in each of these stars.
    • I used a little bit of pink sugar that I sprinkled all over the cake just to add a little touch of color

I have also put pictures of two other cakes I made along with the main Candyland one. I just used leftover supplies from  the main cake to decorate the other two.
