Sherien Ryan’s Mutton/ Lamb Stew

This is a really delicious stew that goes very well with Appams. You can use any kind of meat – mutton, lamb or chicken.


Mutton Stew

Serves 8


1 kg Mutton or lamb, deboned and cubed

2 ½ inches of ginger sliced

7-8 cloves

3” cinnamon

2-3 whole green chilies

7 shallots or 2 onions, sliced

4 whole potatoes, peeled

1 tbsp. garlic and ginger paste

2 cans of coconut milk

2-3 tbsp. coconut oil

1 tsp. sugar

2 sprigs of curry leaves


• In a pressure cooker add ginger, mutton, cloves, cinnamon, green chilies, onions, garlic ginger paste with just enough water to cover it.

• Add the potatoes.

• Add salt and cover and let it cook for ½ an hour in the pressure cooker.

• When the meat is tender, add the coconut milk, curry leaves, coconut oil and a little sugar to taste.

• Boil for about 10 minutes and turn heat off and set aside.

• Serve hot with appams or rice.
